‘Reutlinger Nachrichten’ says that in Mozambique people born with a disability face even more discrimination than in Germany. One reason is that in Mozambique superstition is socially-accepted contrary to Europe, so many people just presume that there must be some curse involved if someone is born like that. Also many people over there consider it a shame to be born with a disability. Thus there are parents who hide their children with a disability at home and don’t even let them go to school. Another thing is that teachers – contrary to many Western states – aren’t trained to cope with this type of children. So there have been cases of teachers who simply had enough and told the child in question to go home and never return – and there was nothing the parents could legally do about that. Sadly the number of Mozambiquians with a disability may even increase as some of these are a result of malnutrition or a lack of certain vitamins and calcium – which are rather common in a LDC like Mozambique.

When I took the bus yesterday the bus driver had his radio on. I don’t know which channel this was, but a news reporter reported about Mozambique: Did you know that in Cabo Delgado 856.000 people got forced by militant criminal groups to leave their home? Many boys and young men also were kidnapped by these groups to join their militant organisation. Many acts of violence were committed by them. Many of these thousands of displaced people then went to one of those refugee camps that was built due to this conflict.

The German Roman-Catholic newspaper ‘missio’ says that Pemba (Mozambique) currently houses 700.000 refugees from the city of Palma where in April and May this year Al-Shabab displaced, enslaved or killed thousands of people. Of course a poor city like Pemba – refugees now make about half its population – can’t deal with this sudden increase of citizens. Realizing that there is not enough food or medicine or space for all of them some refugees meanwhile even left Pemba and now are looking for another place to live.

‘Domradio’ says that this week in N’nango (Mozambique) terrorists attacked and robbed a monastery. Luckily the four monks living there were able to flee to another monastery belonging to their order. So nobody was injured that day.
