“Tagesschau” says that in the Indonesian Jakarta Bay refuse collectors usually dispose off waste in the water of this bay. This not only leads to pollution of the water in this bay (making fishermen lose a lot of fish and making huge amounts of water undrinkable for human beings), but it also interrupts the natural flow of several rivers in this area, causing floodings, the next ones to be expected soon.

Another reason why we should protect this rainforest:
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry now published the 2017-edition of their annual list of strange – like an animal looking like a leaf or hat -, newly discovered specimens.
Gracilimus radix is a sort of rat thought to be native to the rainforest of Indonesia only. Scientists think that this rodent is a strict vegetarian, feeding on the roots of plants which is rather unusual for a rat.

The German human-rights organization “GfbV” says that last Thursday in the city of Manokwari (Indonesia) during peaceful demonstrations of natives called “Papua” the police received orders to put an end to this demonstration by all means. In the end they even shot into the crowd, injuring 10 people gravely and even killing a man.
By the way these demonstrations were about politically-motivated arresting of Papua in recent years and about the wish of most papua that Westpapua be separated from the rest of Indonesia.

The news show “Tagesschau” says that in Indonesia at an airport a few tourists were stopped as they tried to smuggle three dissected tiger-hides and some ivory belonging to an elephant into the airplane. Their intentions weren’t necessarily “bad”. I know people who go to zoos and marine parks, who pay for a ticket, only to take photos of the not species-appropriate cages and tanks and of the suffering animals. Then they show these photos to friends and upload them online, telling everyone about the mistreatment of animals in this facility. They don’t realize that by paying for a ticket to enter and by drawing people’s attention towards said park they probably did this institution more of a favor than giving them a disadvantage.
Other people buy mistreated animals not realizing that by paying the owners, they actually encourage them to continue mistreating animals before selling them. They as businessmen of course realize soon that by arising the sympathy of people for the animals they sell, they can make lots of money.
With these tiger-hides it was probably the same. I imagine and they also had honorable, but misguided intentions. They most likely already saw themselves showing them around to everyone at home and telling them “Isn’t this cruel? In Indonesia people easily get away with killing these poor animals. Don’t they realize that these tigers are about to go extinct? Something must be done. That people get away with shooting tigers and tourists get away with smuggling furs and ivory into an Indonesian airplane proves that Indonesia’s government doesn’t do enough against poaching. We should start a petition!” or something like that.
Anyway: Good as the intentions were the guards at the airport didn’t have any understanding of behavior like that. By buying these things they gave financial support to poachers and encouraged them to go on like that. To these officers that was all that counted and they burned the things they confiscated from said tourists..

“Tagesschau” says that for weeks now there has been a fire out of control in some woods in Indonesia which were set on fire to get more space for some soy-fields. People are falling ill to all the air-pollution caused by the fire. To clean those spaces where they already got the fire under control, the fire brigade needs to use specially-trained elephants that were taught a few tricks to deal with this smoke.
