13 String Uyghur Satar with bow
The word Satar means´ the leading instrument´ in Uyghur language.It is made of the wood of apricot and mulberry trees. It is about 140 centimeters long and it is one of the leading bowed instruments in Uyghur orchestras. It has one main steel string 12 addtional strings to make echoes. Eighteen rubber bands are tied to its handle to make tones and it is played by pressing the tones with lefthand strumming the strings with the bow on the right hand . When it is played, it is positioned on the lap of the left leg. Satar has soft , melodic sound and it is the main instrument in the performance of Uyghur 12 Muqam . It plays an important role during the prelude of Muqam . Its adjustments is as follows:
The main string is adjusted to c1 and other strings are adjusted respectively in its order to c, c, d, f, g, c1, d1, e1, g1, a1, c2, a2. There are different ways of adjustments among people as well . 13 String Uyghur Satar was developed on the basis of 5 String Uyghur Tanbour . It has an oval-shaped head which makes echoes .On the surface of its head , sheep skin is attached. The bow is made of twined bristles of horse tails . The Turks used this instrument long time ago .
