I am really sorry for being rude as I was unable to find the answer to my question. What you have explained or said to me is absolutely fine and I’m not denying but the fact is if you consider the 2nd part of the sentence which is according to you is the predicate here, does not fit if you used ‘was’ instead of ‘were’ (that was  ever written!) I think the author wants to indicate that there are several best stories out there and Treasure Islands is just one of them? Are you with me? Please advise ASAP and once again I do apologize for being rude.
