Children in America are not pudgy or chubby or big-boned, they’re fat. Some studies estimate that nearly 20% of children are obese, or very overweight.

Enter: 50 Cent.

With his washboard abs and hip-hop profile, 50 Cent is trying to get America’s youth into shape. Through one of his companies, 50 Cent is sponsoring a cooking competition for high school students to create a healthy recipe that can be used in school cafeterias.

Listen to Taylor and Dave talk about 50 Cent and his fight with fat.

Taylor:  50 Cent is in the news again.

Dave:  What is he doing, marketing his nutritional grape drink?

Taylor:  In addition to, he’s now going to be the “spokes-rapper” for a campaign to promote sound nutritional habits in youngsters. Basically, he’s out there, going, ah, saying, you know, to get a body like mine, you know, you gotta eat right, stop drinking the soda, you know, drink the purple grape juice instead, and, ah, so, he’s really, you know, going to take a stand against obesity in childhood, which apparently in the U.S. right now is a major problem.

Dave:  It is a big problem in the U.S. Did you see the documentary Supersize Me?

Taylor:  No, I didn’t, but I’ve heard a lot about it.

Dave:  It’s just really sickening. And they show a lot of footage of these families crowding their children into the McDonald’s Playlands, and the food that they’re eating, it’s just disgusting.

Taylor:  You know, I eat at McDonald’s, frequently.

Dave:  Oh no.

Taylor:  I can feel the cholesterol going through my blood sometimes and, ah, that’s kind of scary, you know.

Discussion

The food served in schools in the U.S. is usually very unhealthy. Children wash down greasy french fries, hamburgers, and pizza with high-calorie, high-sugar soda or juice. This is part of the reason why American children are getting so fat.

Recently, people have started to notice the problem and are trying to make changes. 50 Cent is sponsoring his cooking competition to get students to eat healhier, and Bill Clinton convinced soda companies such as Coke and Pepsi to stop selling their products to elementary and junior high schools.

How healthy are children in your country? What is a typical school lunch?

Children…well, they’re healthy and good in my country nowadays, although some city kids may get fat by eating too much KFC:P.A typical school lunch is always with a meat dish, two vegetable dishes and a bowl of rice, always with soup.Teachers believe that that’s the most healthy way to eat.
