It’s a custom in the U.S. to make a resolution for the New Year. A resolution is a promise to do something different.
Common resolutions are to exercise, to spend less money or to eat more healthy foods. In this conversation, you’ll hear Miguel choosing one of those.
Have fun!

Miguel

Beth:   Miguel, did you make a New Year’s resolution?

Miguel:   Well, I actually did. I realized at Christmas that I hadn’t eaten any vegetables since, like, Thanksgiving so I figured my New Year’s resolution should be to eat more vegetables.

Beth:   That sounds like a smart resolution to me.

Miguel:   Yeah, I think it’s probably going to help out with my overall health and well-being.

Beth:   Yeah, probably you’ll become more balanced. So how’s it going? Are you sticking to it?

Miguel:   Well, I’ll tell you, it’s difficult. I’m not, like, the biggest fan of salad and, um… You know, it’s hard to make vegetables taste good so I usually just try to… Whenever I go out to eat, I try to order, like, a vegetable-based dish, you know?

Beth:   Well, I can’t even begin to understand that because I love vegetables, but hopefully you’ll start to, uh, appreciate them more since that’s your resolution.

Miguel:   Yeah, I’m working on it. I’m doing my best.

Discussion

So what’s your New Year’s resolution? Is it the same as Miguel’s? Hopefully not. I hope that you already eat lots of vegetables!
I think mine might be to spend more time with my family. I love them so much and I think we should have more dinners and activities.
Have a great New Year and happy holidays!
