Hello!
One of the great things about living in Oregon is the beautiful natural surroundings. Portland, Oregon, where I live, is an amazing city. It’s just an hour away from Mt. Hood and a little over an hour from the coast. Portland is also just a 3 hour drive from Seattle and about 5 hours from Vancouver, Canada.
John recently took a vacation to Vancouver and also traveled to some of the outlying areas around the city. Listen to him tell Miguel about his trip!

Miguel:  So how was your trip up North?

John:  You mean up to Canada?

Miguel:  Yeah.

John:  It was fun. I actually got to see some of the countryside this time.

Miguel:  Like the mountains, or what do you mean by countryside?

John:  Yeah. We stayed in Vancouver, but then we drove up into the Okanogan. And, uh, it was my first time up into those mountains. There’s some pretty cool areas up there. It’s really pretty.

Miguel:  Is it really rough and rustic, or is it, like, domesticated. Are there hotels and stuff, or…

John:  Yeah, but the towns are few and far between. I think one night we drove for over two hours and didn’t see one other car – and this was on a major freeway.

Miguel:  Wow. That’s crazy. I don’t think you would find that even in Oregon, which isn’t the most populated state. So what’d you do up there. Was there some specific site that really, you know, blew your mind?

John:  No. We were just traveling around, but I’d really like to go back now and try some skiing. I hear the snow is really good.

Miguel:  Was the whole area buried in twelve feet of snow or is that whole idea of Canada being, you know, the Arctic, just overblown?

John:  Well, you know, Canada’s a pretty big place and we were on the south side of it, so yeah, up in the hills there was a lot of snow, but in the city, like Vancouver, it was bare. I don’t think they, they get much there. It’s pretty mild since it’s right on the ocean.

Discussion

It sounds like John really enjoyed his adventure in Canada. He was able to see some parts of the country that he’d never seen before. He wants to go back, which means that he must have had a great time.
I’ve only been to Vancouver once, but I’d like to go back there someday soon. It’s an amazing city. The water and the mountains and the beautiful buildings make it unlike any other city in the world.
Have a great week!
Beth
