The pop singer Kesha’s lyrics may be superficial, but they aren’t sugar-coated. Her songs are all about boys, booze, and partying. The style is catchy, bouncy music with simple lyrics that make you want to dance, not think. But as Ella explains, Kesha’s appeal isn’t about how smart her music is. It’s about how real and fun she is. Listen to Ella try to convince Devan that Kesha is more than just a pop star in need of a timeout.

Ella:  For some reason, I really just relate to Kesha’s music. I mean, I know she looks like a cracked-out Taylor Swift, you know, she’s like a bad-ass version of her. But there’s just something so intriguing about her.

Devan:  So what is it that you relate to? ‘Cause I saw the video for “Tik-Tok,” her big single that everybody’s in love with, and it was just like her waking up in a bathtub drunk and, you know, has like a bottle of Jack Daniels that she brushes her teeth with and all this craziness…

Ella:  I don’t know, I just…it’s not very bright or, you know, causing any innovative thinking, but I don’t think that’s the purpose in her music at all.

Devan:  Well, I…you know, this newspaper article called her the degenerate Hannah Montana.

Ella:  Yeah, I agree with that.

Devan:  I agree with that too, but do you think that’s sending a bad message to kids?

Ella:  I don’t know. I think parents should be parenting kids, not really the music. And if your kids are that affected by music, you’re not being a very good parent.

Devan:  That’s true.

Ella:  So I don’t think it’s very fair to blame it on the musicians, ‘cause they’re gonna put what they want out there.

Ella relates to Kesha’s music and thinks that her songs are fun and genuine. Although her lyrics aren’t deep, it isn’t her intention to make people think. Her songs are about being young and carefree and having a crazy time.

Devan thinks Kesha might be sending a bad message to the young girls who listen to her songs and idolize her. Ella agrees that Kesha wouldn’t make the best role model. But she thinks it is parents’ responsibility to raise their children well. It isn’t the responsibility of pop stars like Kesha.

Do you think pop stars need to be good role models for kids? If you were a parent, would you let your children listen to songs that were all about drinking and partying?

I like Kesha’s songs very much. The style is catchy, bouncy music with simple lyrics that make you want to dance, not think. I think she is a talented singer becaust a lot of lyrics are written down by herself.I like her new nice singles which are “Die Young” and “C’mon”.

I think pop stars need to be good role modles for kids, and if I was a parent I would not let my children listen to those songs about drinking and partying.Maybe the kids will be precocious if they look many videos about those teenagers’free style lives.

I am a parent.I think that it's not a problem if my daughter hear that kind of songs. I prefer she listent to the music insted of listening to what our politicians says! It's my responsability to teach her the education!

well. if i were a parent i would try to keep my kids away from this kind of music and things. but i know when as soon as they grow up they will want to listen to to see if its good. i think a good education, parents that share things with their kids, can raise good people, that are able to see what is good or not.

Ke$ha always looks like she's drunk. But I love some of her songs, it's pretty alive, it makes my head nodding and it's kinda perfect to play at parties. She's a wild chick though, and some of her music videos aren't good for very young people.

I think, a child CAN BE affected deeply by music and there is nothing wrong about that. Just what this child is DOING at the end because of the affection that is different story. And parents are also just human beings. You can expect them to educate their children, so finally the children will be able to decide in a good way, but you can not expect parents to control every single little step they do.

Some of her songs are really good, though personally I'd prefer listening to Lady Gaga's songs.
