Spoken English Course Day 13

Lesson

Today I'm talking about a great term to describe someone with a certain psychological condition.  A lot of people have this but don't know it.  It is really helpful to describe people who act this way and is becoming more and more common in daily English.

The word is "Bi Polar"

Bi means 2.  Like Bicycle is 2 wheels.

Polar means 2 ends.  2 extremes.

Someone who has "Bi polar" disorder is a person who has huge mood swings.  They are very happy for a while and think everything is perfect.  Then for no reason, they are sad and depressed for a while.

It is a pretty extreme disease.  Some people can actually kill themselves when they are on a "low".

When they are on a "high" they might gamble, stay up all night, and act crazy.  They are emotionally unstable.

I'm sure you know people who act this way.  Now you know how to express it.

You can say, "She has bi polar disorder" or more commonly in spoken English "he is bi polar".

I hope you enjoyed this lesson again and learned from it.  I always love reading your comments and I really feel thankful for the "likes".

Hope to hear from you.

Hi Andy,

I think a lot of Koreans have this for sure.  I checked in the dictionary and we use this word too.  Thanks again for another useful lesson.

Hey Dinoraptor,

Here is something you might find funny.  I actually have the same thing and I don't really think it's a disorder either.  I have a similar experience, except I don't write poetry.  I am creative during "depressed states".  I can totally accept criticism too.  I'm glad to hear real opinions.  I just wanted to teach this term simply for people to understand the general idea.

I know that a lot of "gifted" people had this all throughout history as well.  It makes life more interesting but I'd say the "disorder" part is that it can make it a bit of a struggle too dealing with "normal" people on a day to day basis.

I have Bi polar but I don't believe it's a disorder, more of a mental diagnose of gifted people. In deep depression I can write poems novels, and very awesome things I can later not believe it was me who wrote them..

and in my very happy mood, I tend to invent stuff, study sleeplessly, or make everyone around me happy..

To be frank I hate people who diagnose mental states as diseases. being a pervert,  bored, or lazy.. those are serious diseases.. that people call Normal..

I hope you also except criticizing comments lol

Hi Criz,

I guess this word is used internationally because it's a professional term.  It is crazy, but a very specific type of craziness.
