Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

In this lesson John and Miguel go over to visit a friend at the house she recently bought. Even though Anne was expecting John and Miguel, you can tell that she is embarrassed because she just got home and feels like her new house is messy. Anne has been moving, so not being completely organized is understandable.
In this situation, Anne wanted John and Miguel to come and see her new place, but it was a very informal event.
In a few months Anne will have her new house all set up. At that time she will probably have a Housewarming, which is a party to celebrate the possession of a new home. At that time, John and Miguel will come over to her house again to help Anne celebrate!

John:  Hey!

Anne:  Hi!

John:  Good to see you!

Anne:  Good to see you! Finally you guys come! (Laughs)

John and Miguel: (Laugh)

Miguel:  What’s new?

Anne:  Hey buddy! I, um… I’m a mess right now! I just actually walked in the door like, two seconds ago, so i’m kind of…

Miguel:  From where?

Anne:  Running errands. I’ve been like, out and about and trying to, you know… Take, take a, take a peek even though it’s a mess.

Miguel:  Take a tour, a grand tour?

John:  This is really cool!

Anne:  I seriously am like, it’s a pit! You should see my bathroom… I like, got up this morning… I’m re-arranging! That’s what my project is today! So have a seat! Can I get you some French lemonade, or um… (Laughs)

Discussion

You can tell by Anne’s voice, and by her manner of speaking that she is flustered. She just got home, she feels like her house is a mess, and she just hasn’t had enough time to get everything ready for company. Can you hear how Anne starts one sentence then quickly switches to another topic? These are clues that she is feeling rushed and a little stressed-out about having guests over.
Anne’s feelings are very understandable… I don’t like having company unless everything is perfect, and I hate the feeling of not having enough time to get everything ready!
John and Miguel don’t think that Anne’s place is a mess though. You can tell from their voices that they are happy for their friend, and glad to see her!
Do people have Housewarmings in your culture? Have you ever felt the way that Anne does? Come and tell us about it on the “Life Goes On” message board!
Have a great week friends!
