“April showers bring May flowers.” You may know the phrase and have it running through your mind as spring springs into bloom across the northern hemisphere!
What a perfect season to give flowers! Giving flowers to your friends and loved ones is a super gift! As flowers are ephemeral and just for feeding the soul with beauty they are very special and will be remembered like a photo in the mind of the lucky recipient of your thoughtfulness.
Flowers have long had symbolic attributes attached to their sweet perfume and aesthetic value. You probably know that giving red roses signifies love but did you know that Lilies and Orange blossoms signify purity?

Here are some ideas to get you going on making your own symbolic bouquet!
In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Europe many paintings and poems used flowers symbolically. As well flowers can be historically linked to a person, like violets, the favorite flower of Napoleon are collected to this day in France to make Napoleonic bouquets. Some flowers can even have actual effects. For instance in ancient Greece students wore sprigs of Rosemary behind their ears to remember what they learned. This comes down to us in the phrase, “Rosemary for remembrance.” Ophelia in the tragic play Hamlet by Shakespeare gives Hamlet a bouquet which includes Rosemary so that he will remember her.
“Tussie Mussie” is a quaint term from the Victorian Era in England and is still used today to mean a hand held bouquet of fragrant flowers and herbs that you pick and give to someone. Often 19th century lovers would send each other messages via their exchanged bouquets.
