It’s 1969 in America, and the first American is about to walk on the moon. Some characters are in California, others in New York. Co-workers are fighting, married couples are in trouble, teenagers are acting crazy. Life is difficult and full of drama for the characters on the final season of “Mad Men.”

During the years 1960 to 1969, “Mad Men” has told the story of an advertising company in New York City. The lives of Don, Peggy, Roger, Pete, Joan, Betty, and many more have been shared with TV watchers for years. But now, in its seventh season, “Mad Men” is almost over. It’s hard to say goodbye to such a well-written and well-loved show.

Marni is especially sad to see “Mad Men” end. What is Rafael’s opinion? Read on to find out in today’s English lesson.

Marni:  I am so going to miss my favorite TV show when it finally ends this coming season.

Rafael:  Let me guess. Mad Men.

Marni:  You know it!

Rafael:  Oh, Don Draper. What a hunk.

Marni:  A dream boat. He’s just everything. The quintessential archetype of the ‘60s man. Love it.

Rafael:  Doesn’t it make you angry, how many affairs he has on his wives?

Marni:  I do think he’s a misogynistic jerk. But he’s also very compelling, deeply troubled… he’s just a man of mystery. But I think the show in general… he’s an incredibly engaging main character, but the show in general just does such an incredible job of portraying this time in American culture. The ‘60s, and what it was like for this group of people that are pretty affluent, and how they experience all these major cultural events.

Rafael:  I’m just amazed at how many cigarettes they all smoke on that show.

Marni:  It is a lot. And it’s probably not so good for their health, but people suffer for their art.

Marni loves everything about “Mad Men,” but especially the character Don Draper. Even though she agrees that he’s misogynistic, Marni thinks that Don is a truly compelling person. More importantly, she thinks that the show does a good job of telling the story of America in the 1960s.

Rafael reminds Marni that Don Draper is unfaithful to his wives. He also points out that everyone smokes a lot of cigarettes on “Mad Men.” It doesn’t seem like Rafael thinks the show is that great, but no one will ever appreciate it as much as Marni does. She sounds genuinely sad that “Mad Men” will be over soon.

Do you watch “Mad Men?” Do you like it as much as Marni likes it? What’s great about “Mad Men?”

shortly,

  • Mad Men is an American television period drama series created and produced by Matthew Weiner. The series premiered on July 19, 2007 on the American cable network AMC and is produced by Lionsgate Television. The seventh and final season will have 14 episodes that will be split into two seven-episode installments, airing in early 2014 and 2015. The first half of the final season premiered on April 13, 2014..

  • Mad Men is set in the 1960s, initially at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York City, and later at the newly created firm, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (later Sterling Cooper & Partners), located nearby in the Time-Life Building, at 1271 Sixth Avenue. According to the show’s pilot, the phrase “Mad men” was a slang term coined in the 1950s by advertisers working on Madison Avenue to refer to themselves, a claim that has since been refuted..

  • Since its premiere, Mad Men has received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its historical authenticity, visual style, costume design, acting, writing, and directing, and has won many awards, including fifteen Emmys and four Golden Globes.

It looks like that we need some American adult citizens who has been grown up in the U.S.A to give a positive response to this question. In fact, I guess, here there would not existed anybody to watch “mad men” serial, at all. I bet.!!!!

Because I have not seen this movie I can’t judge about that. But based on what had been dialoged in this lesson I can propose some ideas. I ‘m with Rafael. I can imagine and also predict that how many people were attracted by the main character in the movie on that time and there is no doubt that cigarette smoking was one of the obvious advertisements and made that most of juveniles all around the world were tended to smoke. Thereby, I suppose it might be the hidden message of that movie.
