In today’s world, many people are changing the conversation about personal identity. In the past, there was a lot of intolerance toward those who did not live typical lives. However, people have been raising awareness about different types of identities. Many want the world to become a more tolerant place for all people.

Recently, Caitlyn Jenner came out to the world as transgender. In the past, she was the male athlete, Bruce Jenner. However, she never felt comfortable in her male body. She was famous for winning a gold medal at the 1976 Olympic games. Then, in 2015, she decided to face the world as Caitlyn. She had a spread in Vanity Fair magazine that explained her choice. She wanted to live the life she dreamed of while helping other transgender individuals.

Listen to today’s English lesson to hear Gary and Andy talk about Caitlyn Jenner’s courage.

Andy_H:  There’s been a lot of media hype around Caitlyn Jenner.

Gary:  There has been.

Andy_H:  She had her spread in Vanity Fair. She came out very publically as transgender.

Gary:  I think she also won an award at ESPN, is that right?

Andy_H:  Well, she won the Courage Award. And I’m not 100% sure that I agree with giving her the Courage Award.

Gary:  I actually think that it’s a fascinating decision from ESPN to award it to Caitlyn Jenner, who is transgender and has changed the whole conversation of what it means to be transgender.

Andy_H:  And brought so much awareness to the intolerance that people with transgender issues face. But when I think of courage, my first thought goes to people in the army, firemen…

Gary:  Don’t forget that, in Caitlyn’s past, she won Olympic medals, so she achieved much more than just to transition from male to female. She was just changing the conversation so that others, who are going through the same process, could go through it in a much easier way.

Andy_H:  And I am happy that, finally, we’re having a conversation about the transitioning process in general.

Gary:  Yeah.

Andy_H:  It’s something that really needs to be talked about.

Andy and Gary have both seen a lot of media hype about Caitlyn Jenner, and they have mixed feelings about this. Although they both think that Caitlyn Jenner is changing the conversation in a helpful way, they have different opinions about her winning the ESPN Courage Award.

Andy thinks that the Courage Award should go to people who fight to protect others. However, Gary thinks that Caitlyn’s choice to transition from male to female was very courageous. In fact, they both think that Caitlyn was able to help many people who are also transgender because she came out so publically.

How do people fight against intolerance in your country? When did you make a choice that took courage?

I think the world is evolving and in the right directions. 50 years ago it was out of question for the politician to be a transgender. The main feature of the politician, btw, is to serve for his country, make the right decisions, make the life better for the people who voted for him.

Ola 3. I’m not aggressive and towers it or not, I also try to tolerate freaks. Let everyone has their own world but let this not flaunt. The fact that someone wants to cut something because he has a problem with that is his personal affair but that does not mean that I have him just for that admire or consider it as something normal.

In my country still there are many people that didn’t open your minds and don’t accept it, still are intolerant about the transgender.

Rafi29, the world is very good and kind to tolerate people like you as well.
Now tell me what they have done wrong to you that you bully them so aggressively and label the others.
Caitlyn Jenner is the symbol of courage, kindness and love and believe me she knows what a woman wants. But I doubt that you do! ;)

According to me, the world is heading for self-destruction, the media tell us that we have to tolerate someone with mental health problems and try to convince us that if we do not like other perversions that we are not tolerant. Once such people healed in psychiatric hospitals and psychiatrists have something to do today is to promote mental problems.

Well, it is too hard to talk about such complicated concept.  As my culture put the transgander under the creminal area.  However, I think the freedom should be given to any person to choose whatever he thinks is suitable for him. It is finally matter of freedom as long as the transgender doesn’t effect negatively and forcely the surround. For me I never be in a situation like that, I mean being with a transgender but I think I am totally able to tolerate with him /her if someday being with.

In Canada, tolerance is cultivated at schools. The children are being tought to accept others for what they are. I highly recommend eveyone who’s got children to watch the musical Kinky Boots. It’s a great touching story about kindness, tolerance, acceptance and friendship. It talks also against bulling.
