What is your favorite clothing company? Are you impressed by their ads? H&M is a popular clothing company that has a customer base in many different countries. The company started in Sweden in 1947. Now, they have more than 3,000 stores all over the world. They also have a program that helps the planet by recycling old clothes.

Like all companies, H&M uses ads to sell their clothing. Some ads show women being happy and embracing their differences. Other ads show people representing different lifestyles. But not everyone is happy about H&M’s ads. Some people have no sympathy for the company. Other people are torn. They haven’t decided yet if they like or dislike the company.

Dominique is not a fan of H&M. Listen to today’s English lesson to hear what she tells Andy about the company.

Andy_H:  I just saw the coolest ad for H&M, and I am not a fan of H&M….

Dominique:  Hmmm…

Andy_H:  ...I don’t shop there, it’s not of any importance to me, but this ad was about women being women, in every way possible. Different shapes, different sizes, different looks, different everything, and all of them just embracing their own personality and representing it through their clothing. It was fantastic!

Dominique:  I’m so not impressed, and I feel like they kind of did this to get women back on their side because in Africa…

Andy_H:  Yeah?

Dominique:  ... the whole continent, where they have H&Ms, not a single person of color is represented in any of their advertisements.

Andy_H:  What?

Dominique:  Yeah. It’s pretty freaking crazy. I mean, the majority of their customer base are people of color. I feel like they’re doing that whole women-sympathy thing because of that, because they lost me as a customer, and I like to shop there.

Andy_H:  Well, going back to 2010, they started a really great program, and it’s still continuing where they’re actually recycling clothing. I don’t know if you know about this.

Dominique:  Yeah, I’ve seen that. Still not impressed.

Andy_H:  And it’s continuing. They have actually gathered hundreds of millions of pounds of clothing that’s then reused into the clothing that they’re able to sell. Wow, this is tough. Like I said, I’m not a big fan of H&M, but now I’m really torn.

Dominique:  Still not shopping there.

Andy_H:  Wow.

Andy saw a new ad for H&M and was really impressed. The ad showed different women embracing the way they looked. Each woman used clothing as a way of representing her own personality, and Andy thought this was cool. Or at least he did… until Dominique told him about another H&M ad, and why she’s not on their side anymore.

The ad that Dominique heard about made a lot of people angry. She tells Andy that H&M only used white models in ads in Africa, even though their customer base includes people of all colors. Because of this, Dominique has no sympathy for H&M. Andy is torn. He likes the recycling that H&M does, but he needs to think more about what Dominique told him.

Are you a fan of H&M? Where do you like to shop for clothing?

I ain’t a brand conscious rather quality. I try to get outfits from independent retailers.
Nowadays, Primark is giving tough time to rest of its competitors, in UK. Primark is an ultimate success because of cheap but quality products, and is rapidly increasing customer base all over U.K.
Last year prestigious clothing brand BHS closed down because of losing most of its customer base to Primark due to considerable price difference for similar quality. Another prestigious brand M&S recently down sized its opperation in different cities due to low turnover. However, H&M is still little or not affected by Primark effect.
In my opinion, high turnover is more important for an organization to sustain it rather overpricing strategy.

I’m not a fan of H&M. H&M clothings are expensive in my country. I like to wear fashion clothing but I don’t have much money for that, I often buy cheap clothing or sale off. I like to shop on the pavement, there’re a lot of selling cloths on pavement at the end of the year 2016 in my place.
