Nothing is better than a classic dance party! It’s fun to get together with friends and remember the killer dance moves of the past. In the US, 1970s disco is one of the favorite themes for this type of party. In fact, a roller party is one of the most popular types of disco parties. There, people can wear roller skates and shake their groove things under the disco ball.

Disco parties often happen at discotheques. People dress up in bell-bottom jeans and platforms. A person who has lots of hair might even wear an Afro hairstyle. Then, everyone goes out on the dance floor to boogie. They will probably dance to music by the Bee Gees as well as other popular 1970s bands, and they will likely do the Hustle.

Andy is super excited for his 1970s disco party. Listen as he tells Marni all about it in today’s English lesson.

Andy_H:  You can tell by the way I use my walk, I’m a woman’s man… No time to talk.

Marni:  Wow! I didn’t know you were such a Bee Gees fan.

Andy_H:  Oh man, I am preparing for my 1970s disco-themed party. And guess what, you’re invited.

Marni:  Thanks, but wait…uh… Are you talking about, like, you’re going to go to a discotheque, like you’re going have a… we’re going to a dance club? Your party is there?

Andy_H:  You bet we’re going to a dance club! I booked us a private room at the Roller Derby, and we are going to have a 1970s roller party. I remember my dad…. He used to go to these all the time, and he had these killer pairs of bell-bottom jeans. It was awesome! Believe it or not… you wouldn’t guess it looking at me… but my dad had a booming Afro.

Marni:  Oh wow! Oh, that’s… uh, you’re right! I would not have expected that. Well, I’ve got a killer pair of platforms that I will wear to your party. And I will just be ready to shake my groove thing.

Andy_H:  Just make sure you do a little bit of research.

Marni:  Oh!

Andy_H:  I want you to be able to do a little bit of the finger pointing…

Marni:  I will practice my dance moves.

Andy_H:  Please!

Marni:  Get the Hustle down.

Andy_H:  Yeah, yeah. Because when we’re under the disco ball, I don’t want you to embarrass me in front of all of our friends.

Marni:  Wow! OK, the pressure is on, but I think I can do it.

Andy_H:  All right! Let’s boogie!

Marni hears Andy singing the song Stayin’ Alive, by the Bee Gees. She is surprised until Andy explains that he is getting ready for his 1970s disco roller party. He’s even rented a private room at a local dance club. Andy explains that his dad used to go to disco parties all the time during the 1970s. He wore bell-bottom jeans and had an Afro.

Marni thinks that the party sounds like a lot of fun. She even has a pair of awesome platform shoes to wear. She tells Andy that she will enjoy dancing under the disco ball. However, Andy wants to make sure that she knows all the famous 1970s dances, like the Hustle. Marni isn’t afraid. She knows how to shake her groove thing.

What is your favorite dance from the 1970s? Are classic dance parties popular in your country?

I don’t have favorite dance from the 1970s, I had not born. But it’s a very famous trend around the world.
