When we think of the typical beauty cult, we usually imagine women with perfect makeup and glamorous clothes. For years, CoverGirl has helped people to learn about these beauty trends. CoverGirl is a popular makeup brand, and they have many famous models. In the past, CoverGirl models were always women, but in 2016, James Charles became the first cover boy.

James Charles is only 17 years old, but he has a knack for makeup. This young makeup artist began sharing makeup ideas on Instagram. He became very popular because of his extravagant eye makeup. He loves to use lots of glitter, and he can do wonderful stage makeup. CoverGirl asked him to model for them. He was very happy to become the first male model for the popular makeup brand.

Marni and Andy both think James Charles is glam. Listen to their thoughts in today’s English lesson.

Marni:  I was just reading about James Charles, the 17-year-old who will be the first cover boy for CoverGirl.

Andy_H:  I read about this. Interesting gender bend that James Charles has been able to kind-of thrust upon the online beauty cult.

Marni:  Yeah, it’s pretty amazing. He’s an incredible makeup artist, and he does, like, crazy big, extravagant eye work and lots of glitter. It’s very glamorous.

Andy_H:  You know, he’s got a real knack for makeup. I’ve dated my share of women, and none of them have come close to anything that I saw on this video.

Marni:  Yeah, well, I think it’s also fascinating that 17-year-olds… they’ve grown up online, so their entire life is documented if they want it to be. And he’s just totally created this following, and now he’s going to be the face of CoverGirl.

Andy_H:  At 17 years old, I mean, what a self-starter!

Marni:  Yep!

Andy_H:  You know, I’ve got to admit, that guy is… and you won’t hear me say this a lot… G. L. A. M. Glam!

Marni:  I agree!

Marni tells Andy that she was reading about James Charles, the first male model for CoverGirl. Andy has also heard about James Charles. He thinks the makeup artist has helped to change people’s ideas about makeup being for women only. He thinks this is an interesting change for the traditional cult of beauty. He also likes that James Charles is a self-starter.

Marni thinks James Charles’s makeup is amazing. She likes his extravagant eye makeup and the way he uses glitter. It’s very glamorous. Marni thinks it’s interesting that people as young as James Charles have grown up with the internet. It’s very natural for today’s 17-year-olds to have their lives documented online. She thinks it’s interesting that James Charles used his online popularity to become famous.

Do you wear makeup? When was the last time you used glitter?

I don’t use makeup because in my culture it’s not usual. The men have to keep the male appearance.

Boy George was much better makeup artist and he did it in 80’s. I don’t use make up and I don’t think I’ll ever accept this challenge:) generally speaking, men are hairy creatures and i don’t think this trend will ever go mainstream. Make up suits on women because they have smooth faces.
