When you are working on a project, do you keep a slow and steady pace? Maybe, you work for 2 hours every day until you are finished. On the other hand, maybe, you prefer to get everything done at once. Or perhaps, you start slow, then ramp up how much work you do near the end of the project.

To ramp something up is to make it bigger or more extreme. If you’re at a party, you could get everyone to dance by ramping up the volume on the music you are listening to. If you are cooking a dish, you could ramp up the flavor by adding more spices to the recipe. Your teacher might ramp up the stress in the classroom by giving you a difficult test. And if you are working on a project, you could ramp up your work schedule by doing more work or working more quickly. We can use the expression ramp up for many different situations!

Actress Samira Wiley is currently working on a series called The Handmaid’s Tale. She says that the writers have ramped up the story to make it more exciting and extreme.
