Human beings are often at the mercy of our massive planet. When a natural disaster strikes, there’s not a lot we can do. Earthquakes and hurricanes are horrifying events. These events can destroy people’s lives. Just ask the people of Pompeii. Pompeii was a city in ancient Rome that was completely buried in ash after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79.

During the time of the eruption, there were about 11,000 people living in Pompeii. Residents of Pompeii were not prepared for the volcanic eruption. They were caked in falling ash. This caused many of them to be mummified. These preserved bodies are popular museum displays. We have been able to learn a lot about ancient Rome through these mummified remains.

Andy recently saw a Pompeii exhibit at a museum. Listen as Romeo gets a little creeped out about mummified remains in this English lesson.

Romeo

Andy_H:  Yo, Romeo. I just got back from the museum, and they have this crazy Pompeii exhibit. That stuff really changed my life.

Romeo:  Creeped out just hearing about it!

Andy_H:  I mean, you know Pompeii, right?

Romeo:  Yeah, but I wouldn’t want to see that stuff up close.

Andy_H:  Oh, no. It’s so interesting. All right, so, you know, the volcano exploded, caked people in ash...

Romeo:  Thanks for that history lesson.

Andy_H:  ...mummified them.

Romeo:  Horrifying.

Andy_H:  It was terrible! I mean, the eruption and the ash just, like, destroyed everybody’s life. There was…

Romeo:  Instant death.

Andy_H:  ... five feet of ash just rained down. But when you go and see these, you know, people, you can still see, like, sandals on them. There’s this one there, it’s got a dog, and the dog still has its collar. Like, 2,000-year-old doggo with its collar still hanging out.

Romeo:  No!

Andy_H:  Makes you wonder about, you know, even places like Tokyo. Like, Mt. Fuji is a… that’s a volcano. It makes you wonder how prepared people are for such events.

Romeo:  Probably not prepared at all.

Do you live near a volcano? Do you know what you would do if it erupted?
