There is no other form of art quite like collage. In other forms of art, you start from the beginning. With painting, a blank canvas and colors. With dance, a song and choreography. With collage, you use other materials, strips of fabric, scraps of old magazines, bubble wrap, to make a masterpiece!

Collage is the perfect way to recycle objects you know into something completely new and mysterious. Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure as you assemble all the bits and pieces on a page. Some of the stuff could be funky and weird, but just make sure to balance it out. It is all about embracing the chaos!

Nestor has an idea for a collage. Listen as he and Marni discuss in today’s English lesson.

Nestor:  Hey Marni.

Marni:  Yes?

Nestor:  So, Romeo moved out and he left…

Marni:  Oh yeah!

Nestor:  He left all this stuff, this weird stuff in his room… I think I’m going to make a collage out of it. Do you want to maybe help?

Marni:  Oh! Um, are you talking about just scraps of paper, or…?

Nestor:  It’s like paper, and strips of fabric, and like bubble wrap...

Marni:  He did love bubble wrap.

Nestor:  And popcorn plastic.

Marni:  OK.

Nestor:  What I figured that we can somehow balance it all out and make it, you know…

Marni:  Make it into art!

Nestor:  Yeah, put it on the wall! And, I don’t know, maybe call him up and say, “Hey, look what we did with your weird stuff!”

Marni:  I like it! I like that you’re embracing all these leftover randomness… I mean, people would just look at that and throw it away! But not you!

Nestor:  No.

Marni:  No! You’re thinking: “I’m going to make something out of this,” and you know, there’s that saying: another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Nestor:  I’ve never heard that.

Marni:  No, you’ve never heard that? OK…

Nestor:  What does that mean?

Marni:  Well, that Romeo clearly viewed all these items as trash, right? He left them behind. He didn’t want them anymore. And you’re looking at them and seeing all these possibilities in them, right?

Nestor:  Ohhh, I see!

Marni:  So, his trash, your treasure.

Nestor:  I want to tell him that you told me that he basically lived in a junkyard.

Marni:  That’s not what I’m saying.

Romeo moved out of Nestor’s place and left a bunch of weird stuff like fabric strips, bubble wrap, popcorn plastic, and more. Nestor wants to use it to create a collage. He thinks they can balance it all out on a page and make a very pretty collage. Marni thinks it’s a great idea to make art out of these scraps.

Nestor could even call Romeo and brag about their pretty collage! Marni likes the idea. She loves the expression, “Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This means that what is trash to someone is valued by someone else. So, Romeo’s trash became Nestor’s treasure. Nestor sees all of these possibilities! He also wants to call Romeo and tell him he basically lived in a junkyard.

Have you ever made a collage? Do you save your scraps to make something beautiful?
