Sugar and Spice is not the kind of teen movie you would expect. It’s about cheerleaders who unite to help a friend in need. Listen to Joe and I discuss the movie below.

Nedra

Joe: Nedra, I overheard you saying that you saw the movie Sugar and Spice? I saw a commercial for that on TV, and I was laughing to myself because the girls in that movie look totally out of control.

Nedra: Yeah, it seems that way, but it was actually a pretty good movie.

Joe: Okay, let’s start from the beginning. What in the heck is that movie about?

Nedra: Oh, it’s about these teenage girls that, um, are cheerleaders and one of them gets pregnant and needs money and so they decide to like, watch all these movies and rob a bank.

Joe: See, you know, I saw the commercial for that movie and I thought to myself, I said, all these girls robbing the bank, but I…it didn’t say like why they were robbing the bank so that’s what threw me.

Nedra: Yeah, I mean, that’s why it’s a fun movie to watch because it builds up to that, um, and it takes about at least forty-five minutes into the movie for you to realize why they’re gonna, you know, rob a bank.

Joe: Oh okay. That’s how it plays out. That’s alright.

Nedra: Yeah. It’s um…it’s kind of interesting. It reminds me of the movie The Usual Suspects.

Joe: Oh yes. Usual suspects, uh huh. Yeah that’s another good one.

Nedra: Yeah, only with teenage girls.

Discussion

One of the more interesting teenage actresses, Mena Suvari, who acted in American Beauty[/def] and American Pie I and II, is in the movie. She plays one of the cheerleaders who wants to help the star cheerleader. Her mother, Sean Young, is in prison and helps her and the other cheerleaders speak with other inmates about tips to rob a bank.
I had a fun time watching Sugar and Spice. I would have liked to change a few of the scenes and the ending reminded me of The Usual Suspects a little bit, but it’s hard for movies to be original. Sugar and Spice also reminds me of the movie Heathers, which was a popular dark comedy when I was a teenager. I had friends that used to play croquet and call each other Heather, like the girls did in Heathers. I wonder if_* Sugar and Spice will have the same kind of cult following as _Heathers. Have you seen Sugar and Spice*? What’s your opinion?
